The noise was coming from a big box in the corner of room. She lifted the lid and a little man jumped out. He was wearing a long pointed hat that flopped over at the top and on his feet he had boots that were too big. He said: "What's all this crying then? Ha, ha, ha! Ha, ha, ha!" The baker's daughter said: "The Prince has locked me up here and told me that I must spin all this straw into gold or he will put me in his prison but no one can spin straw into gold!" The little man looked at the straw and then the spinning wheel and said: "I could do that for you!" The baker's daughter said: "Oh thank you, thank you! I will give you this necklace?" The little man, jumped on the stool, picked up a handful of straw and started spinning. Soon the bobbin on the spinning wheel was full of gold thread, all the straw was gone and so had the little man.
The door opened and the Prince came in and said: "GOLD! Guards! Bring more straw! Lots of straw! The baker's daughter will spin it all into gold and make me rich!" The baker's daughter said: "But I must go home!" The Prince did not listen to her and soon the guards brought more straw and left her locked in the room again.
She tried to spin the straw, as she had seen the little man do, but she could not.
